Cabina armadio — Storage Dressing Room, Porro

Cabina armadio, Storage Dressing Room, Porro

Bedrooms are the places where we are reborn each day, which is why they are deserving of particular attention. Our bodies are extraordinary machines, capable of regenerating themselves whilst we sleep, and our daily wellbeing depends, at least in part, on the quality of that sleep.

How can the décor help to improve it? Firstly, the primary function of the room should be recognised: sleeping and enjoying intimacy, keeping distractions to a minimum. In feng shui, for example, the advice is not to hoard clothes, shoes and objects in the bedroom, as stagnant energy is associated with difficulty in resting and renewing oneself. Being able to clean easily under the bed is also important, to prevent dust and clutter from becoming a permanent build-up. As Karen Kingston explains in her course Change Your Bedroom, Change Your Life, sleep disorders are one of the most significant issues of our time and can cause physical and psychological distress. Factors to consider include evening exposure to blue light from smartphones and LED bulbs, the presence of televisions and connected devices, electromagnetic fields and excessive lighting inside the room. Finally, in smaller homes, bedrooms run the risk of becoming spare rooms, used as storage spaces for laundry and all manner of different things. The following is a selection of furniture and accessories from the Salone del Mobile.Milano exhibitors to help you rethink this space.

Bed — Glen, Calligaris

Beds form the centrepiece of any bedroom and should be the first item to be chosen. As well as the size of the mattress, other factors to consider include the overall dimensions of the bed, ease of cleaning and the ability to keep the floor beneath it clear. Padded headboards make for a comfortable, supported place to read or sit, whilst enveloping shapes help to create a sense of security, as in the case of Glen by Calligaris, a new 2026 design by Gino Carollo.

Mattress — Chandon Mattress, Colunex

Mattresses come directly into contact with the body and affect both comfort and sleep quality. Chandon by Colunex combines selected natural fibres, including silk, linen and merino wool, to promote comfort, ventilation and support. Materials should also be chosen with environmental impact in mind - when it comes to synthetic foams, volatile organic compound emissions and the potential for end-of-life recovery must be borne in mind. Durability and composition thus become essential criteria for reducing the environmental footprint of a product destined to be replaced periodically.

Rug — Utopia, Limited Edition

In the bedroom, rugs contribute to thermal and tactile comfort, making contact with the floor more welcoming. Utopia by Limited Edition reinterprets the concentric rings of a tree trunk using wool, Tencel and linen, which combine warmth, luminosity and natural texture. Four different pile heights serve to create a three-dimensional, layered surface, available in three organic shapes and an equal number of colour combinations.

Armchair — Venus, Verzelloni

Designed by CRD Verzelloni, Venus is an armchair that boasts soft organic shapes, in which the armrests, seat and backrest merge into a single continuous volume. The solid wood and plywood frame is padded with polyurethane foam of varying densities; the base is integrated and concealed. In the fabric version, the upholstery is fully removable, whilst the parts are fixed in the leather version. In bedrooms, the armchair can mark out designated area for reading or dressing, provided its dimensions do not obstruct the flow of movement.

Table lamp — Rue Férou, Paradisoterrestre

Designed by Man Ray and originally produced by Sirrah in 1972, Rue Férou has been reissued by Paradisoterrestre with a brass-plated metal frame and a lampshade made of canvas-covered cardboard, available in a range of different colours. The design incorporates a storage base, turning the lamp into a piece that combines both lighting and storage. In bedrooms, it can be placed on bedside or console tables. The shade helps to diffuse the light; however, the position and height of the lamp should be adjusted to suit reading and viewing when in bed.

Pendant lamp — OneOff, Davide Groppi

OneOff by Davide Groppi interprets lighting as an intervention within the space, prioritising the effect of the light above traditional light fittings. A solution based on light projection allows for the use of walls and surfaces without needing to introduce a large decorative element. Bedroom schemes should take the contrast between lit areas and shadows into account, avoiding glare in the field of vision of anyone lying down. If the pendant is positioned above the bed, softly-shaped lampshades are to be recommended, while pointed ones directed towards the sleeper should be avoided.

Bedside table — Omar, Meridiani

Bedside tables are functional pieces, but their shape also contributes to the perception of the space given over to rest. According to feng shui, sharp edges and corners pointing towards the body are to be avoided in favour of rounded shapes and soft contours. Omar by Meridiani, with its curved corners and ample space to store a book or a few items, fits neatly beside the bed.

Curtains —Windows Collection, Sunbrella

Curtains help to control natural light, ensure privacy and influence the perception of surfaces. Sunbrella’s Windows Collection offers a solution based on the orientation of the bedroom, the transparency of the fabric and the level of light blocking required. Dual-layered systems can combine light-filtering panels for daytime and blackout panel for nighttime. Fabric choices should also take lightfastness, maintenance and performance over time into account. Ceiling-mounted rails and full-height curtains can also serve to emphasise the verticality of the room and create a more seamless look on window walls.

Freestanding walk-in wardrobe — Freedhome, Caccaro

Freedhome by Caccaro allows the wardrobe to be organised as a dedicated system, to be integrated into the bedroom according to the available footprint. Freestanding solutions can define the area set aside for clothing without necessarily requiring a separate room. The design should take into account the depth of the compartments, accessibility and the circulation space around the units. Hanging rails, shelves and drawers should be sized according to the type of wardrobe, avoiding modules that are oversized or hard to reach.

Wardrobe — Shadow Box and Groove, GF Interiors

Wardrobes are essential for keeping bedrooms tidy and doing away with visual clutter. Shadow Box by GF Interiors, designed by Guzzini and Fontana, combines different types of storage - an upper compartment with an Evans Air aluminium and glass framed door, push-pull lower drawers and an open compartment that can be used as a shoe rack. The interplay between solid and open sections helps organise the wardrobe, ensuring that clothes, accessories and footwear are readily accessible.

Vase — Crockery Pink, 1882 Ltd

Vases can become  sculptural elements, introducing colour and texture into bedrooms. Crockery Pink, designed by Max Lamb for 1882 Ltd and made from terracotta in Stoke-on-Trent, England, reimagines the roughly-hewn surface of the Crockery collection in a vibrant pink colour. The pieces can be placed on console tables or sideboards, either on their own or filled with fresh flowers, to add character to surfaces and introduce a splash of colour.

Mirror — Shimmer, Glas Italia

Designed by Patricia Urquiola, the Shimmer collection from Glas Italia comprises mirrors in extralight glass characterised by a degrading shaded silvering mix and an iridescent multichromatic finish. The effect changes according to the angle of the light and the vantage point, making the mirror a decorative as well as a functional element. In the bedroom, mirrors can amplify the brightness and alter the perception of depth, but their position must be carefully considered, preferably avoiding a direct reflection of the bed.

Console table — Woodstone Sideboard, Piegatto

The Woodstone Sideboard by Piegatto can be used to organise an empty wall and provide a surface for items without resorting to a full-height unit. This organically shaped console table can hold books, personal items or a lamp, contributing to the room’s overall composition. When it comes to choice, depth is a key consideration: the top must be large enough to use without obstructing movement, particularly where narrow rooms are concerned.

Sideboard — Bastone Cabinet, Nikari

This sideboard is designed to accommodate linen and personal items, keeping bedroom surfaces clutter-free. Designed in 2018 by Antrei Hartikainen for Poiat Furniture and manufactured by Nikari, the Bastone Cabinet explores the relationship between light, shadow and craftsmanship with a structure featuring slender cylindrical wooden elements, from which the sideboard takes its Italian name, meaning rod or stick. Crafted from oak, it comes in a lacquered black or smoked oak finish, and with or without doors.

Coat rack — Clothing House, Essem Design

Inspired by the shapes of houses and cottages, the Clothing House coat rack by Essem Design becomes a small piece of domestic architecture, easily movable and suitable for storing guests’ outerwear or everyday clothing. It is a flexible solution for guest bedrooms and temporary spaces, to be used judiciously: having just a few items on display prevents the rack from becoming a visual clutter hotspot and helps to keep the sleeping area tidy.

Walk-in wardrobe — Storage Dressing Room, Porro

Storage, designed by Piero Lissoni in collaboration with CRS Porro, is a modular system that allows for the integration of walk-in wardrobes, traditional wardrobes and boiserie. The frame is designed to ensure visual continuity inside the wardrobe, moving away from the use of side panels as physical barriers. The ability to alternate between open and closed elements, different materials and transparent solutions enables the extent of visible clothing to be adjusted. In the bedroom, the system can mark out a dedicated wardrobe area, organising storage and access routes according to the available space.

Decorative radiator — Add-On, Tubes Radiatori

Designed by Satyendra Pakhalé for Tubes Radiatori, Add-On is made of aluminium and comes in both an electric and a hydraulic version. Its configuration allows the radiator to be treated as an architectural element, capable of defining a wall or being integrated into a partition. In the hydraulic version, the valve and pressure relief device can be housed in a recessed unit up to six metres away from the heating element, minimising the visibility of technical components.

Vanity unit — Butter Toiletta, Durame

Dressing tables allow personal daily care routines to be concentrated in a single spot, without taking up the space of a separate room. Designed by Dmitry Kozinenko for Durame, Butter Toiletta combines a solid wood and veneer structure – available in Canaletto walnut, oak or black oak – with a drawer and a top featuring an adjustable mirror and a solid wood storage tray. The tubular metal frame completes the structure, in a gunmetal, brass or bronze finish.
