Cabana, Neptune and Scenery: three independent magazines that view the home not as a model to be imitated, but as a portrait of those who live there
Gallotti&Radice: 70 years of research, combining experimentation and vision
Gruppo presente, Gallotti&Radice - Ph. Carlotta Manaigo
The story of a pioneering glass furniture company. A tale of transparency, light and materials. And an exhibition celebrating the anniversary, exploring memory, innovation, new design languages and future goals
The Como-based company is marking an important milestone this year, once again reaffirming its vision of contemporary living. Founded in 1956 by Pierangelo Gallotti and Luigi Radice as an art space dedicated to glass decoration, the company pioneered the use of crystal in the furniture sector, transforming a transparent material into a design narrative that still remains highly contemporary.
Today, that original vision has informed a collection that is the perfect blend of style and elegance: a carefully calibrated balance of forms, materials, craftsmanship and experimentation, deeply rooted in the Made in Italy tradition. Glass takes centre stage, but it is no longer the sole focus. Aside from its transparency, carefully selected metals, woods and marbles interact, crafted to last and to trigger emotion. It is an intimate narrative, made up of details – bevelled edges, gold leaf, copper or aluminium, hand-finished touches – in a quest not for glamour, but for durability.
The company’s identity was cemented in the 1970s and 1980s with the introduction of the metal joint, which evolved from a technical solution into a distinctive design feature. Between the 1990s and 2020, the company’s evolution led to the launch of the office collection, the expansion of product categories and the development of a lifestyle concept. Over time, the artisanal values of its origins have remained central, whilst glass – reinterpreted with contemporary finishes – continues to take centre stage, finding expression in products such as the Admira sideboard (aluminium-foil-coated glass), the Re-Verre coffee table (recycled glass), the Bolle lamp (mouth-blown glass with colour achieved through sublimation) and the President desk (lacquered and hand-brushed glass) - all examples of an ongoing exploration of material, function and decorative language.
Marking this 70th Anniversary, Tales in Glass, a dialogue between past, present and future is an exclusive journey through seven decades of stories of craftsmanship and passion for glass, narrated by the French architect Sophie Dries. Set in the historic Milanese Meli Lupi di Soragna palace, specially transformed into an immersive setting for Salone del Mobile.Milano 2026 week, the installation played with light and space: the solidity of the frescoed ceilings and panelling meeting the lightness and transparency of glass in an almost electric dialogue, an aesthetic device serving to amplify the very nature of the materials. The exhibition traced the brand’s chronological and stylistic evolution through six previously unseen interpretations by international and contemporary artists – Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi (Italy), Ivania Carpio (Netherlands/Belgium), Estudio Persona (USA/Uruguay), Rania Hamed (United Arab Emirates/Canada), Fumie Shibata (Japan) and Miminat Shodeinde (UK/Nigeria) - looking above all to the future and leaving room for cross-cultural influences and diverse artistic languages.
The brand’s 70th anniversary celebrations continued at the Salone del Mobile, where it presented a coherent yet constantly evolving vision. New tactile and visual experiences, unexpected combinations of materials and sophisticated colour palettes all pointed to a strong identity not anchored to the past, but embracing new influences. This forward-looking approach is also reflected in the brand’s most recent projects. Whilst crystal remains a constant, the desire to experiment results in pieces that blend materials and surfaces: from walnut to Carrara marble, right through to complex compositions that combine ash, aluminium and glass in a single design concept. However, the dual production line always remains evident: one highly industrialised and the other artisanal, rooted in tradition.
It is a collaborative approach, open to contributions from internationally renowned designers – from Oscar and Gabriele Buratti to Martina and Massimo Castagna, Studiopepe, , Dainelli Studio, Pietro Russo, Federica Biasi, David / Nicolas and Pinuccio Borgonovo, right through to the firm’s recent collaboration with Francesco Meda & David Lopez Quincoces, Marco Boga, Marialaura Rossiello Irvine and the promising Samuele Tremolada – continually redrawing the boundaries of home living. Extending from Como all over the world, Gallotti&Radice thus continues to reimagine the beauty of contemporary living. Sharing the same lightness as glass, yet with solid roots, forged over seventy years of history.
