Jaipur Rugs

Jaipur Rugs is an Indian company that combines the pursuit of profit with the spreading of kindness, with the aim of benefiting all the people sitting around its rugs; customers, artisans, local communities, employees, suppliers, buyers, and partners

Jaipur Rugs is a family business strengthened by the purpose of protecting ancestral know-how and connecting rural craftsmanship with global consumers. By placing the human aspect at its core, the company has grown to become the largest network of artisans in India. It uses the age-old art form of handmade carpets as a tool to bring prosperity into the homes of 40,000 rural artisans of which 85% are women. It works in 600 villages spread across five states in India, providing families with sustainable livelihood at their doorsteps. Every rug brings to the cities the stories of its weaver and binds the lives at the grassroots with urban consumers.

The vast network of artisans and weavers that are associated with Jaipur Rugs is an ocean of knowledge when it comes to ancient Indian philosophies. The art of carpet weaving has been passed down from generation to generation and working with these artisans as fellow designers one gets to learn about a variety of Indian traditional art forms firsthand.

The goal of Jaipur Rugs is to bridge the gap between the two ends of the spectrum. Founded in 1978 by Nand Kishore Chaudhary with just two looms, it now has over 7000 looms and sells in over 65 countries. Today, the company creates contemporary works of art by collaborating with creative talents capable of showcasing this ancestral craft with a new vision.

CONTEMPORARY KILIMS, COUTURE CARPETS AND INDO-ITALIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

Jaipur Rugs, the largest manufacturer of handmade rugs and pioneer of artisan carpet making in India, presents three new collections at Salone Del Mobile 2024. Highlighting our Indo-Italian connection via our Milan boutique at Piazza Castello, the three collaborations with an all-Italian lineup of studios share a common thread in their design-forward take on traditional weaving techniques. Spanning luxury yarns, experimental forms, and abstract decoration, the dream team lineup of designers includes some of Italy’s most prestigious studios and a new relationship with the Chanel-owned yarn atelier Vimar 1991. Showcasing the global appeal of Jaipur Rugs, the presentation is shown in a quiet monochrome palette that puts the focus on luxury, innovation and the exquisite detail of Indian craftsmanship. Shown at various sites across Milan, the three collections are brought together in our Hall 1 booth at Salone, wrapped in a landmark architectural facade designed by the great Italian architect Michele de Lucchi.

VIMAR 1991 x JAIPUR RUGS – “COUTURE COLLECTION”

The Chanel-owned atelier of prestigious yarns creates its first collection of couture carpets.

The Piedmont-based yarn producer Vimar 1991 is part of Chanel’s conglomerate of specialist craft ateliers and is used by the house to create its iconic tweed jackets. For Jaipur Rugs, Vimar 1991 weaves its famous luxury threads into carpets for the first time. Crafted from a monochrome palette of yarns, the couture-quality carpets are seemingly woven using techniques usually reserved for the catwalk: bouclé tweeds and herringbone twills that are refashioned into tight knots or light flat weave dhurries. Classic codes and iconic black and white designs make the “COUTURE COLLECTION” collection seasonless and timeless. Like their sartorial inspiration, these are carpets that simply go with everything.

AMDL CIRCLE, A STUDIO FOUNDED BY MICHELE DE LUCCHI x JAIPUR RUGS - "FAÇADE COLLECTION"

Contemporary kilims by the great Italian architect, founder of AMDL Circle, and a key member of the Memphis collective.

For his collaboration with Jaipur Rugs, the respected architect Michele de Lucchi and his studio AMDL Circle rethink traditional carpet construction, creating a series of contemporary kilims. Breaking the carpet into a patchwork, AMDL stitches them back together in geometric compositions. Inspired by double skins and his signature architectural facades, these experimental tapestries lend themselves for use as wall coverings or room dividers, as well as flooring - innovations that showcase the Jaipur Rugs ambition to redefine the role of carpets in interior spaces. A much admired figure in the design world, Michele de Lucchi is an architect, designer, philosopher and thinker who was chair of the Memphis group alongside Ettore Sottsass. Known for his explorations in craftsmanship, he has previously designed furniture for Hermes and Bottega Ghianda, as well as most of the leading Italian design editors.
