What is meant by parasite architecture, where does the term come from, and how has a practice that began as a radical utopia become a concrete strategy for the contemporary city?

Straddling avant-garde and inspiration, essential sculptures and multifunctional systems: technology, design and lifestyles translate into light, as a design tool at the service of creativity
The Salone del Mobile.Milano 2023 brings with it Euroluce, the biennial event focused on sources of inspiration that look at the design dimension of light. The International Lighting Exhibition this year celebrates its 31st edition at Rho Fiera, spreading across over 29,229 sqm of space divided into 4 darkened pavilions (9-11 and 1-15) for 315 exhibitors, of which 45% from outside Italy, in a new exhibition layout designed by Lombardini22.

After considering visitor flows and the principles of design for all, Euroluce 2023 has adopted a new circular shape, presenting a more fluid itinerary that also leaves room for areas dedicated to cultural events. The main focus is on creating the best experience for visitors, who can stroll through the pavilions to observe the variety and the different adaptations lighting design has to offer, as one of the sectors that has evolved the most in recent years. Among the various products on display, guests will immediately notice a great drive for modularity, compositional freedom and customization, as well as a more holistic approach to design, capable of blurring the boundary between decorative and technical lighting.

Sculptural creations that are pure and essential, geometric, but also colorful, poetic, full of sinuous and enveloping lines: immersive environments come to life at Euroluce to discover the new products and innovations through which brands interpret how people are changing, adopting new behaviors and lifestyles. The exhibition is also the place to discover the visions and inspirations that led designers to use light as a tool at the service of creativity, suggesting new concepts that will change the way we think of light fixtures in the future.

The variety of proposals at Euroluce 2023 ranges from innovations in light fixtures for outdoor, indoor or industrial use to solutions dedicated to events or the hospital sector, from lighting automation systems to light sources and software for light technologies. Research tackles the relationship between light and volume, finishes, sustainable materials, visual comfort, digitization, miniaturization and energy saving, as well as the different configurations of light sources which, with great versatility, adapt to different contexts.

Euroluce 2023 thus confirms its role as a state-of-the-art event also in the field of sustainability and energy saving: low-consumption and high-efficiency LED sources are increasingly popular, while at the production level many brands are thinking about the activation of circular economy principles in manufacturing and distribution, in addition to the use of low-impact, recycled or recyclable raw materials.

Suspension lamps come in different shapes and scales, for every possible environment and style, smart, and dimmable. Designs revisit the past and take on new forms, using cutting-edge materials or reinterpreting traditional ones. Some become luminous sculptures that seem modeled from a single volume, to gain different perspectives from each point of observation. Finally, suspension lamps with a more contemporary touch have rounded lines, with big or small spheric pendants.

Wall lamps become more flexible thanks to compositional elements that are broken down, reassembled and integrated, allowing for a level of freedom that fuels personal interpretation. Spaces are defined by light, as if custom-designed, with bright signs or through more sophisticated and complex systems. A mix of aesthetics and functionality, essential lines, color, lightness, opaque and transparent structures define portable and rechargeable table lamps designed for both indoor and outdoor spaces. At Euroluce, many brands present this type of lamp, which can become a real piece of decor to be showcased on tables, desks, nightstands – and even on terraces and in gardens. With their lithe and elegant design, adjustable and extendable floor lamps often have stems in satin aluminum or painted metal – usually white or black. Joint systems and counterweights allow them to take on different configurations, thus directing light in different ways.

Among the various trends, Euroluce also tackles the concepts of smart and human-centric lighting: smart control systems for a successful integration of comfort, safety and sustainability. Sensors, network connections and wireless technologies, indeed, make it now possible to control lights through any device and to monitor performance and consumption trends, ultimately creating personalized and modifiable projects, as well as solutions to automatically turn lamps on and off or adjust their intensity according to natural light. The integration of IoT control systems has led to the dawn of lighting systems which, by embracing the digital world, evolve into data collection platforms. In this sense, the first applications of LiFi (Light Fidelity) technology are already available, leveraging the modulation of light emitted by LEDs for wireless data transmission.

All in all, light is gaining a strong expressive value, often taking on shapes inspired by nature, with minimal and organic lines. Natural materials such as wood and marble are mostly recovered, some pieces are made in bamboo or rattan, while glass and metal blend into new harmonies. Light influences our perceptions, performance, preferences, behaviors and even our mood – and that is precisely why lighting design is crucial to any project’s success.
