From 22nd September to 1st October, the Austrian city will be transformed by the festival with the design world at its heart.

How can design help to shape sustainable solutions from a social and ecological standpoint? How can it help us forge a deep connection with the objects, spaces and services we need? These are just a couple of the questions to which the 2023 edition of Vienna Design Week, the leading multidisciplinary festival being held from 22nd September to 1st October this year, will be endeavouring to respond.

Vienna Design Week has helped define the design and architectural identity of the Austrian city in since 2007. With more than 200 events and over 40,000 visitors each year, it’s set to return with a packed programme of multifaceted appointments ranging from industrial to graphic design, by way of architecture and  craftsmanship, all the way to social design and the new digital frontiers. The events are spread throughout the city and are free of charge to the general public.

Along with the established Vienna Design Week formats such as Stadtarbeit and Urban Food & Design, the 2023 edition will unveil a graphic campaign masterminded by the art director Christof Nardin and the team from the Bueronardin studios, and there will also be a series of collateral events, such as discussion panels, workshops, tours and vernissages. New this year is Re:Form, devised in collaboration with Ökobusiness Wien 2023, which will see five teams of three partners from the design and consultancy worlds and businesses focus on different aspects of sustainability: from workers’ rights to energy and, not least, the new materials. Urban Food & Design will also be back in a bid to create a bridge between the creative and food industries, building long term partnerships and coming up with original solutions.

Debate around the future of cities is more relevant than ever and forms the heart of The City as Resource project, devised by the Vienna Business Agency together with Vienna Design Week, which took shape after an open call for submissions, with a 5,000 euro prize for each of the studios involved. At the centre of the Stadtarbeit format, an integral part of the festival for the last few editions, lies social design and its various applications: a tool for responding to contemporary challenges. Platform is Vienna Design Week’s widespread project, taking shape in numerous independent locations dotted about the city, and realised with support from Erste Bank and devised in partnership with Caritas Vienna. The programme is organised autonomously, and is entrusted to the individual participants, whether they be designers, architectural firms or companies.
