Yachting and furnishings, a supply chain representative of Italian productivity

Ethimo, la collezione modulare Baia, design Christophe Pillet, è composte da oltre venti elementi che, combinati tra loro, possono arredare diverse tipologie di spazio, per ampiezza e morfologia
The Salone Nautico di Genova 2025 reaches its 65th edition and confirms its role as a global showcase for all product sectors. The role of companies producing furnishings, contract and outdoor furniture in particular remains relevant
With the claim “We are made of sea” underscoring its close ties with the water, the Salone Nautico di Genova 2025 scheduled from 18 to 23 September is confirmed as a “strategic factor for the expansion of its business, clearly evident for Italian industry by its important and growing contribution to the national surplus in the balance of trade,” observes Marina Stella, Director General of Confindustria Nautica.
According to the data that emerged from the report “The State of the Art of the Global Yachting Market 2025 Edition” which, carried out by Deloitte in collaboration with Confindustria Nautica, analyzes the dynamics of the sector internationally, Italy in fact is the export leader in the world yachting industry. 90% of the national output is exported, representing some 13% of the country’s trade balance surplus, up sharply from 3% in 2015. In the superyacht segment, Italy maintains its leadership with 54% of orders per unit and 34% of value, driven by the 30-60 meter segment.
The sector proved more solid than in previous years, “remaining well positioned to capture future demand for high-value boats, supported by the growth of private wealth and a uniquely competitive positioning worldwide,” notes Tommaso Nastasi, Partner and Value Creation Service Leader of Deloitte Italia.
In a context with such a solid foundation, outdoor and contract furniture companies have already been distinguished for several years by their lively and growing design capacity oriented towards the furnishing of these new luxurious “villas on the water”.
The outdoor and contract sector
Roda is working along these lines. For several years now it has been collaborating with the symbols of excellence and innovation on the international yachting scene, such as Sanlorenzo, Riva and the Ferretti Group, so taking its furnishings to the high seas. In addition to Genoa, Roda will be present at the boat shows in Cannes and Monaco, together with other shipyards, including Beneteau, Volvo Penta with an installation in the VIP Lounge, Cantiere delle Marche, Palumbo, Princess Yachts, Cranchi, Pardo and Silent Yacht.
Inspired by the theme “living at sea”, Ethimo is meeting the challenge of yachting with Baia and Costiera, designed by Christophe Pillet, a collection of lounge furnishings designed to transfer the atmosphere and quality of the brand’s outdoor collections to yachts, large boats and exclusive yacht clubs. A veritable yacht collection that is a tailor-made project, where fabrics, large proportions and materials of high technical quality design ideal forms to furnish saloons afloat.
The charm of yachting is transferred to the world of home living with the new co-branded Exteta x Riva line. Designed by Massimo Castagna, the collection draws on the historic tradition of Riva, the marque founded in 1842 that is the symbol of a lifestyle. Exteta x Riva is available in a complete range of furnishings designed for the decks of yachts as well as for residential spaces, lounge corners, breakout areas and outdoor dining spaces.
The Salò collection designed by Matteo Thun and Benedetto Fasciana for Unopiù celebrates the lightness of the Modern Movement and stands out by the aesthetic cleanness of the product by the refined details of its fabrication, such as the almost invisible welds. The chairs and sunbeds are stackable, a feature designed to meet the need to optimize space, especially in the hospitality sector.
The close connection with water is also a constant for the Nalu family of furnishings. The term of Hawaiian origin means “wave” and emphasizes the close bond between Talenti and the world of boating. Designed by Ludovica Serafini + Roberto Palomba, it comprises chairs, sofas, tables and sunbeds, as well as tailor-made and fully coordinated supplementary elements. “Nalu is a collection that works on color, especially through the use of ceramics,” explains Ludovica Serafini. The colors available - from red to deep blue, passing through white and graphite – make for infinite combinations.
The role of trade fairs and the weight of tariffs
“Tariffs are one of the main factors of uncertainty affecting forecasts of sales performance and margins for 2025,” stresses Ernesto Lanzillo, Deloitte Private Leader Italia. “For an industrial sector such as yachting, which makes a very significant contribution to the country’s trade surplus, a critical examination of the customs strategies adopted so far is even more important. We have to be sure that we have benefited from all the regulatory advantages available as well as analyzing opportunities in new export markets, less exposed to tariff turbulence, or the relocation of production through alliances with international operators. This means that role of trade fairs is extremely important, not only to increase the visibility of products, but also to establish strategic connections between international operators.”
Nautical design at the Genoa Boat Show 2025
Among the events scheduled during the boat show, there will also be the sixth edition of the Design Innovation Award promoted by Confindustria Nautica to celebrate research, excellence and innovation in the sector. This year the presidency of the international jury is entrusted to Walter De Silva, winner of the Compasso d'Oro and ambassador of Italian excellence to the world. “Today, nautical design is a veritable cultural frontier, in which sustainability, innovation and formal identity are closely entwined,” observes Luisa Bocchietto, coordinator of the Steering Committee of the Award.
