The professional interactions that arise during the event are nurtured by the culture of design and the project. Disseminating information and training are fundamental moments for the growth of its community. Pavilion 14 is the venue for the Talks, Round Tables, the Salone's Library and the Corraini Mobile Bookshop

The Salone del Mobile.Milano is all about culture, as well as business and networking. The Talks and Round Tables entitled Drafting Futures. Conversations about Next Perspectives, curated by Annalisa Rosso, taking place in Pavilion 14, in the Arena designed by Formafantasma, feature some of the most interesting personalities of our time. Another innovation this year is the launch of the Salone Library project.

The organization of “Drafting Futures. Conversations about Next Perspectives” is the result of a collective work developed in the course of the year at Salone del Mobile.Milano. The choice of the title stems in particular from ideas exchanged with Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano: “Her ability to interpret the current situation really impressed me”, says the curator Annalisa Rosso. “We realized that the Talks are truly crucial events, not just because they host people who make the history of design, but also because they offer a platform for discussion.” These are brief moments of reflection – lasting about 45 minutes - that elicit ideas and inspire and influence the thinking of visitors to the fair, where - as has always happened - ideas are exchanged, people get together, and discoveries are made. Listening at first hand to the experiences of the speakers is instructive for architects, the companies themselves, students, and the international press.

The speakers: outstanding figures in the world of design

The Talks and Round Tables present people of the caliber of Francis Kéré. The first and only African architect to have won the Pritzker Prize, he has been working for all his life on the theme of community, of how important it is to involve communities in the creation of projects, so that architecture is not just handed down from above. He will be interviewed by Giulia Ricci.

Or John Pawson in conversation with Deyan Sudjic, and Jeanne Gang with Johanna Agerman Ross, two professionals comparing the issues of an architectural career, attentive to the viewpoints of the users of spaces, as well as urban, environmental and nature projects. Or again the President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, Maria Porro, who will be meeting Hans Ulrich Obrist, a figure capable of giving further impetus and vision to the sector.

In conversation with Giulia Ricci, Diébédo Francis Kéré expressed his vision of community: “I see it as a sense of belonging to a group, sharing the same ideas, the same place, the same space. As a designer, I’m thinking about how to better shape this community life.” Speaking about his professional success, Kéré stressed that, “It was not a miracle, but a set of circumstances grasped at the right moment.” He then urged the need to make the best use of one’s skills to build a better world. “Talent is everywhere, but in some places there is still a lack of schools and opportunities.”

In conclusion, he mentioned the assignment for the virtual museum project where UNESCO and Interpol have teamed up to bring back stolen objects virtually and so make them accessible. The primary objective of this initiative is to raise awareness of the illicit trafficking of stolen cultural assets and to help in their recovery. “A very important project to restore to humanity objects that no longer exist.”

The themes of the Round Tables

Alongside the big names of the project, the theme of artificial intelligence is addressed in The Present and Future of Artificial Intelligence (with the involvement, among others, of Paolo Ciuccarelli, who collaborated on  the Salone del Mobile.Milano’s communication campaign), the theme of the relationship between pleasure boating and design, entitled Yachting and Design: the Positive Influences of Made in Italy, in collaboration with the Genoa International Boat Show, and news of the hospitality sector, which is experiencing an epoch-making revolution, at the encounter entitled New Shapes of Hospitality

If last year the position of the speakers was frontal, this year the speakers are central: “We like the idea of the circularity of thought, of the community meeting in the agora,” explains the curator.

The Talk “Pleasure Boating and Design: the Positive Influences of Made in Italy” was held on the opening day of the Salone del Mobile.Milano. “Boating has taught us how to read space, because even in dimensions that are not those of civil architecture, it is still possible to design interesting, desirable and above all flexible spaces. This calls for convertible furnishings, such as lounge areas that become dining rooms, spaces that we have also begun to use in homes,” observed Chiara Massarani, Architect, Senior Project Director ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. Stressing the synergy between yachting and design, Luisa Bocchietto drew the conclusions: “In recent years the world of pleasure boating has evolved immensely in terms of performance and interiors. For these reasons it has a lot to derive from the furniture companies. At the same time, designers of furniture find many ideas from the world of pleasure boating that compel them to work on spaces more carefully and creatively, also in contact with nature.”

The Talks have been recognized as training initiatives accredited by the National Order of Architects (CNAPPC - National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservationists; each one entitles the student to the acquisition of 2 credits).

Salone’s Library, a cultural outpost

In this 2024 edition, a new project connected to the Talks is also inaugurated in the Arena: the Salone’s Library, also designed by Formafantasma. The first volumes in the new library will be those suggested by some of the key speakers and personalities for the Salone del Mobile.Milano, who have been asked to recommend authors who were important in their formation.

“There are some nice surprises. Some are the essential books that we all have in our bookshelves, others are just enlightening texts,” reveals Annalisa Rosso. Formafantasma’s contribution also involved the Corraini Mobile Bookshop (Pavilion 14), where the book signing with the authors is held at 12.15 p.m. after the Talks.

The library is set to grow over time. “Among those that struck me,” says the curator, “were the three books recommended by Sudjic: we expected Adolf Loos, while Emile Zola’s The Ladies’ Paradise and Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence are rather surprising titles. Among those suggested by Jeanne Gang is The Life of Plants by  Emanuele Coccia and then several books by the anthropologist-sociologist Bruno Latour. John Pawson, among others, also suggested Bruce Chatwin and Donald Judd, while Nao Tamura, already a special guest at Euroluce 2023, alongside books on the design of architecture, also pointed out Robert M. Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Haruki Murakami’s  Norwegian Wood... And this is just the start of the work.”

Table Tennis by SaloneSatellite

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the SaloneSatellite (Hall 7), a Table Tennis Game Match was organized between past designers and newcomers to SaloneSatellite 2024 (available to the public by reservation). The Table Tennis project is by Studio Adriano Design, now well-known designers who participated in the SaloneSatellite in the past. The match is organized by Teckell, the manufacturer of the table. Finally, in the city, Salone del Mobile.Milano is present with the Design Kiosk: a temporary space that offers a rich cultural program, a selection of publications and exclusive products related to design.
