Pak Man Lee is a passionate collector and influential figure in the world of design, art, and furniture. Growing up in Hong Kong as the fourth generation of a furniture family, he was immersed in the intricacies of design from a young age. Memories of his father returning from Salone del Mobile, bringing home unique swatches and teaching him to collect stamps, ignited a lifelong passion for collecting and understanding craftsmanship.
Despite his early struggles to express himself amidst societal expectations, Lee found his voice in the vibrant world of fashion and design. Moving to Los Angeles was a transformative experience; it was there that he embraced independence and pursued his dreams. After earning a degree in economics, he followed his true calling into fashion, becoming a menswear buyer at Fred Segal—a haven for celebrities and trendsetters. This exposure to Hollywood's dynamic environment deepened his aesthetic sensibilities and broadened his worldview.
With a successful career in import/export, Lee's travels across Europe and Asia further enriched his understanding of global history and culture. These experiences fostered a profound appreciation for art and design, leading him to become a dedicated collector. Over 23 years of attending Salone del Mobile, he evolved from an admirer of commercial brands to a connoisseur seeking niche, collectible pieces. His collaborations with renowned galleries like Nilufar and Rosanna Orlandi, combined with invitations to prestigious events such as Documenta and the Venice Biennale, have solidified his position in the art community. Lee's collecting philosophy reflects his individuality; he seeks out pieces that resonate with him personally, moving beyond mainstream names to embrace the unique and the unconventional. His eclectic taste is influenced by his love for alternative music and underground culture, favoring artists and designers who challenge the status quo.
For Lee, a home is more than just a space; it’s a canvas that reflects one's identity and values. Each piece he acquires becomes part of a larger narrative about who he is and what he hopes to leave behind. As he continues to explore and collect, he remains committed to understanding not only the world around him but also his own journey as a human being.
