Barbara Friedrich, born in 1951, trained as a foreign language correspondent after completing her school leaving certificate and then studied Communication, Literature and Philosophy at the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum.
She has worked as a journalist specialising in architecture, design and lifestyles from the early 1980s onwards. After holding senior positions at the magazines Ambiente, Elle Decor and Architektur&Wohnen, she became Editor-in-Chief of Zuhause Wohnen in 1993 and of Architektur&Wohnen at the Jahreszeiten Verlag publishing house in Hamburg in 1999. She was Editor-in-Chief and subsequently publisher of the magazine until 2016. Since then, she has worked as an independent author, moderator and jury member in the architecture and design world. Barbara Friedrich produces video clips on design classics, available on YouTube and on her website www.barbarafriedrich.de. She was the promoter and co-author of the Euro Design Guide (Heyne Verlag, 1991). She is a member of the Rat für Formgebung (German Design Council), and has served on its Board for many years, as well as on that of the AED (Association for the Promotion of Architecture, Engineering and Design) in Stuttgart.
