Women within institutions
Pavilion 3 - Arena
With issues of diversity and equity under scrutiny now more than ever, Tony Chambers will lead a lively discussion investigating why many of our major international design museums and cultural institutions have for too long been deprived of a female point of view. Tulga Beyerle, Director of Hamburg Museum of Applied Arts, Alexandra Cunningham, Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and Lilli Hollein, Director of MAK Wien will discuss their roles, responsibilities and goals to remedy this shameful historical imbalance.

Tulga Beyerle (b. 1964, Vienna) has been director of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MKG) since 1 December 2018. In keeping with the goal of museums of applied and decorative arts everywhere to provide inspiration for the best in design both in the present and future, Beyerle strives to position MKG as a place of myriad possibilities and a platform for discourse and negotiation at the highest level and yet without excluding any members of society.
Lilli Hollein is the newly appointed general director of the MAK-Museum of Applied Arts Vienna. She was until May 2021 director and one of three co-founders of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, Austria's largest design festival. She completed her industrial design studies at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.
