The deconstruction of warp and weft

The TRAMAS collection is a design by the architecture studio Romero & Vallejo that explores the aesthetic and manual crafting possibilities when different types of materials are mixed in the same piece, generating a composition with a very graphic character. The meticulousness required for its execution means that they can only be made on hand-operated looms.

“This collection innovatively merges the warp and weft using felt and different wools. Felt, a key material in this design, is obtained through a process of agglutinating wool fibers which, through heat, humidity and pressure, interweave and compact to form a dense and soft-to-the-touch surface. This material not only provides a feeling of warmth and comfort, but also introduces a layer of visual depth to the TRAMAS rugs, which, in combination with wool, generates tactile and aesthetic contrasts that enrich the texture and perception of the piece,” explain Romero & Vallejo.

Felt is a fetish material for Romero & Vallejo, with which they have already created other designs for GAN, such as the Ruff pouf.

“The difficulty has resided in ensuring that each material and each tone complemented each other harmoniously, without losing the depth or intensity that characterize a three-dimensional piece. However, this challenge has also been what has enriched the collection, leading us to a place where abstraction becomes a tangible and multisensory experience,” say Romero & Vallejo.
