The Salone’s fresh take on outdoor furniture: design according to magazines

The way we live at home is changing, and it’s starting to show in gardens, terraces and balconies that meet our desire for increasingly mutual spatial relationships: Wallpaper*, COZYHOME and H.O.M.E. tell us more

Spring is in bloom and summer is just around the corner. They bring with them the desire to become one with the joyful explosion of nature: colors, sounds and scents enter our homes from the window – and we let ourselves indulge in the temptation of bringing them into our interiors. In our seventh episode dedicated to the story of design as told by editorial teams around the world, we discover that instead, perhaps, it is our interiors that contaminate outdoor spaces, making them more comfortable than ever.

“The ever-growing need for open-air spaces and fresh air calls for design to allow us to live in the same quality, comfort and elegance as indoors,” says Olly Mason, head of interiors at British magazine Wallpaper*. A statement she interpreted by styling the May issue’s outdoor furniture shoot with Massimo Vitali with a fresh, natural vibe. She goes on to explain, “With our outdoor furniture stories, we aim at elevating outdoor spaces to become an extension of indoor living areas. Furniture designs originally conceived for interior use are now being crafted and updated with technical fabrics built to last in through the outdoor elements. Bold colour palettes appearing in rich burnt reds, warm brown tones and oranges. Woven materials, mesh and reeded surfaces are prominent themes to add depth and texture to products both structurally and visually. Manufacturers are carefully considering the materials they are selecting. This includes materials built to last such as teak (B&B Italia Pablo Chair, EMU Thor Stools, Living Divani Kasbah Sofa) – which allows the owner to have the finish age naturally or restore it to its original condition. It is important that materials come from certified wood plantations and that traceability of materials is clear, giving clarity to the consumer but also an understanding of long-lasting quality and durability. Well-considered design has allowed brands to use fewer fixings (an example is the Kettal Ring Chair), including chemical adhesives and the need for fewer screws, allowing products to be constructed seamlessly and using fewer resources.”

Likewise, Nasia Papadopoulou – editor in chief of Greek magazine COZYHOME – enthusiastically takes on the challenge of this season’s trends: “Spring has always been a synonym to outdoor living! This is why the latest issue of COZYHOME is dedicated to nature, life by the pool, ethereal fabrics and spring atmospheres! Fresh air is good for the soul and we all need it so much, after the Covid-19 era. Individuals and families have the urge to live life outside their homes, and design brands have great new things to show. The biggest trend is comfort! Comfortable, yet ultra-stylish and premium collections from the biggest design firms. Natural elements, knitted chairs, earthy tones and pastels, among plants. Simplicity, luxurious comfort, timeless elegance, innovative systems and high quality characterize brands’ new collections. A mix of wood, metal and outdoor fabrics masterfully combined. Chaises-longues and sunbeds, on beautiful decks by the pool! A beautifully served meal on the balcony, under the stars! An elegant sofa immersed in nature, with candles, wine and big pillows on the grass. The Salone del Mobile is totally anticipated and truly missed since its last edition. Hopefully we will be able to see all the latest top trends and products, from the best companies!"

“For more than two years, the Salone we knew and loved was pushed back by Covid-19 and supply chain delays. Now the Salone is back on steady ground, with strength und good mood,” adds in the same vein Desirée Treichl-Stürgkh, director of Austrian magazine H.O.M.E. “For more than 20 years the editors of H.O.M.E. have been traveling to Milano to cover all the news. Salone is our most important idea supplier. The news, the events, the flair around the fair help us to create wonderful content. This year we expect a kind of ‘new’ start and are looking forward to loads of exciting ideas, new inspiration and the opportunity to meet everyone again.”
