THE MEANING OF THINGS

"I’ve been lucky enough to draw a great deal, to design a great deal, and you can take these objects and work out what the principal design component is. Often the determining factor has been economic; sometimes it’s the association with the materials, or the way they behave. Materials can suggest different behaviours to today’s, not just in a bid to be different, obviously, but because the materials suggest different actions.”

"Design has always been there, it hasn’t suddenly materialised, because people have always designed things. There’s always been design for mass production: there are anonymous objects, but there are also objects that were invented precisely in relation to function. The function of scissors is to cut, but the type of scissors changes completely according to what one is cutting.”

Achille had this to say about his work:

"I’d rather the things I designed were not recognised because of their brand, but for the reciprocal sympathetic bond that is created between the person using the object and the person who designed it. I wouldn’t like this to become a preconception, though, because it’s often said that design objects should be amusing … But to hell with being amusing, they should serve a purpose.
